Aus etwas wurden vier Stunden Schlaf und der halbe Tag war weg. So ging das ja nun nicht. Der Plan f\u00fcr den heutigen Tag war wenig fahren, viel erlaufen.<br \/>\nDa grosse Wanderungen jetzt nicht mehr drin waren, entschied ich mich f\u00fcr den Cairn o&#8217; Get\/Whaligoe Steps Trek von &#8220;Walking Higlands&#8221;. Ein paar Meilen einfaches Terrain und gegen Ende die &#8220;ber\u00fchmten&#8221; Stufen von Whaligoe. Der Pfad ging durch ein paar Schafwiesen und \u00fcber ein paar H\u00fcgel bis hin zu einem alten, verfallenen Cairn, dem besagten Cairn o&#8217; Get. Mehr als 5000 Jahre alt sollte er sein, eine Begr\u00e4bnisst\u00e4tte der Fr\u00fchzeit zu der Menschen pilgerten um ihren Verstorbenen Nahe zu sein. Der Cairn selbst war nicht mehr allzu gut erhalten, viele der Steine der originalen Konstruktion wurden f\u00fcr andere Bauten &#8220;wiederverwertet&#8221;. Auf den Bildern ist die innere Begr\u00e4bniskammer zu sehen und ein Teil der Dachkonstruktion. Das meiste ist von Gras \u00fcberwachsen oder schlicht abgetragen worden.<br \/>\nEin Bauwerk in der N\u00e4he, dass von den Steinen des Cairn profitierte war ein Damm, der vermutlich im 19.Jahrhundert gebaut wurde. Um ehrlich zu sein fand ich den bei weitem Interessanter als den Cairn. Heute liegt, wie man vielleicht erkennen kann, hinter dem Damm nur Sumpfgebiet. Aber dann wurde es spannend. In der Zufahrt zu den Stufen lauert der Caretaker, der Mensch, der sich um den Erhalt der Anlage k\u00fcmmert, und \u00fcberf\u00e4llt offensichtliche Touristen, um ihnen die Geschichte der Stufen zu erz\u00e4hlen. Und man sollte es definitiv geschehen lassen! Der gute Mann f\u00fcgt dem Fakten orientierten Detailwissen von Wikipedia das gewisse bisschen Authentizit\u00e4t hinzu, das solche Orte sehenswert macht. Klar beschrieb er wieviele Stufen es am Anfang waren, warum der Ort so heisst wie er heisst und wann das letzte Boot zum letzten Mal aus dem Wasser geholt wurde. Aber er erz\u00e4hlte eben auch dass man nach Teerspuren auf den Steinen Auschau halten soll, dort wo die Boote wasserdicht gemacht wurden. Wie der Teer heiss gemacht wurde und dass man die Feuerstelle daf\u00fcr auch noch sehen kann. Wie die Fischernetze getrocknet wurden und wo man noch die Reste des Piers erkennen kann, an dem die fahrenden Fischh\u00e4ndler die F\u00e4sser mit Hering abgeholt haben. Und dass sein Grossvater einer der letzten Fischer war und welches sein Boot auf diesem Foto (Ein schwarzweiss A0 Poster das er einem zeigte, das von der anderen Seite der Bucht gemacht wurde) war. Danach ist das Herabsteigen der 337 Stufen nochmal umso interssanter.<br \/>\nHeruntersteigen war schon beeindruckend genug. Genauso wie der Hafen selbst. Die Bucht war eine ideale Stelle f\u00fcr einen solchen Hafen, wo das Wasser vielleicht etwas ruhiger war als an anderen Stellen der K\u00fcste. Aber f\u00fcr die kolossale Sch\u00f6nheit der Steilk\u00fcste haben sich die Fischer aus der Zeit bestimmt nicht interessiert. H\u00f6chstens vielleicht die Jugendlichen, die gegen\u00fcber des Hafens auf den Felsvorspr\u00fcngen nach M\u00f6weneiern suchten.<br \/>\nDas Hochsteigen allerdings war die echte Herausforderung. Auf halber Strecke gibt es eine kleine Steinbank, auf der man kurz verschnaufen kann. In den aktiven Fischerzeiten wurde diese Stelle allerdings zum Trocknen von Fischen f\u00fcr den Eigenbedarf genutzt. Darum k\u00fcmmerten sich die Frauen. Und darum, dass die Fische, die nicht im Hafen selbst verschifft wurden, im Nahen Ort Wick (ca. 10 Meilen) verkauft wurden. Oder als Essen auf dem Tisch landeten. Der Caretaker beschrieb sie auch (\u00fcberraschenderweise, da er eher wie ein altbackener Schotte aussah) als die wahren Helden dieser Zeit. Sie mussten teils \u00f6fter die Treppen runter- und hochsteigen als ihre M\u00e4nner, aber k\u00fcmmerten sich trotzdem noch um den Verkauf des Fisches in Wick und darum, dass die Familie versorgt nach Wick rein um zu tanken, eine Kleinigkeit zum Abendessen zu besorgen, und dann zur\u00fcck in&#8217;s B&amp;B.
